Travel Day 1

 Off to the Race!

Alyssa and I started the day in Lafayette gathering all the materials needed for the airplane: a tow bar, oil, cleaning supplies, chocks...etc...

Once everything was loaded and we received a weather brief, we said goodbye to our friends and family, and departed!

We made our way to 1H0 or Creve Coeur which is located just west of St. Louis International. We had the opportunity to fly directly over the field.


Once at 1H0 we said hello and had lunch with friends who were in the area.
We also, met up with two other racing teams, Purdue Pilots Incorporated(PPI) and Lewis University. 


After lunch all the teams were ready to be on our way, though thunderstorms were building. 
We received some information from a weather briefer and decided to head out immediately.
Along the way we navigated around the thunderstorms and played 'spot the cows' from our journey between Missouri and Oklahoma. 



We landed safely in Tulsa, Oklahoma where we met up with Morgan, another member of PPI and we headed to dinner.

 We stayed the night in Tulsa and planned to depart to Oklahoma City in the morning.

Sweetwater!

June 15, 2018 Arrival to Sweetwater, Texas. Airport code: SWW. The morning of Friday the 15th, Alyssa and I departed from Tulsa, OK to head to Oklahoma City (OKC), along with our fellow racers from PPI and Lewis. This first leg was uneventful and we were soon landing in OKC. Following in the ways of the previous day, we utilized the FBO crew car and were off to lunch where we did some planning for the arrival to Sweetwater.  Megan, Jane, Cathy, Nicoletta, Alyssa, Tiffany Nicoletta, PPI Pilot, had some plans for us to check out a science museum in OKC that was hosting one of the first Women's Air Derby Race Aircraft. The Women's Air Derby would later be known as the Air Race Classic. This museum not only paid tribute to Louise Thaden who flew the plane, but it was an interactive museum. Start Activities

June 17, 2018 Briefings The day was scheduled for racer briefings from 0800 through 1500. These included a collegiate brief, an all racer brief, specifics for landing at the stops, scoring breakdown, and equipment technology explanations. Lunchtime involved the watching of the documentary "Mercury 13" as well as a visit from Gene Nora Jessen who was one of the ladies who underwent all the physical testing to be a woman who would be sent to space. Sadly the program was defunded and these ladies did not make it into space due to societal beliefs.  It was an honor to hear her speak and we are grateful to her for gifting all the racing ladies a signed copy of her book "Sky Girls" as well as starting the break in the glass ceiling for women astronauts. Alyssa and I needed to clean the plane because we were unable to do so the day before due to our maintenance situation. Heading Home

June 25, 2018 Heading Home      IZA - IAG      IAG - BKL      BKL - LAF The race activities had come to an end and it was time to go home.  We were up bright and early with a passenger this time, Rachel!  Alyssa, Rachel, and I headed to the airport where we filed our flight plan, received a weather brief, and loaded up the aircraft.  On our route home we decided to stop by Niagara Falls. We did a fly over, landed, and had a bite to eat. Then the Lewis racers, PPI racers, and Purdue racers (us) went to look at the Falls on foot.  It was gorgeous and the strength of the water was insanely powerful.  Back at the airport did one more fly over of the Falls and departed to Cleveland Lakefront which has a gorgeous approach.  Again, we stopped for dinner and then onto the final leg to LAF.
